Martyr of the Storm: Hay Festival Scribblers
The Martyr of the Storm story is described under Heritage. For this project we worked with the Hay Festival Scribblers, a group of 11-17 year olds from a range of local secondary schools, who share a passion for writing. The Scribblers meet weekly at the Hay Festival offices to carry out literary-based workshop classes.
In Spring 2013 the Scribblers visited the Martyrs’ memorial stone on Llanbedr Hill, then her grave at Painscastle Chapel.

They met with one of her granddaughters, Marion Lally and worked with local authors Tom Bullough and Jenny Valentine to use the original source material (press cuttings from the 1920s, a poem written at the time and first-hand accounts from Marion) to interpret the story. The result was a range of creative writing pieces that retell the story from the Scribblers’ personal perspectives which you can download and read below:

Martyr of the Storm: Hay Community Choir
The Scribblers body of work, and all the original material was passed onto Catherine Hughes, Leader Hay Community Choir, who wrote a moving musical score and lyrics based on the same story. ‘I’m Almost Home’ is a song with English verses and a chorus in Welsh. You can listen to the song here …
The choir performed the song in public at the Cheese Market Opening Ceremony on 19 April 2014.
